Estonian President Karis urged Ukraine to consider territorial concessions

Ukraine will at some point have to consider the issue of temporarily renouncing its territorial claims in order to end the conflict.

This was stated by Estonian President Alar Karis in an interview with the U.S. television network NBC.

According to him, at some stage it will be necessary to find a “balance.” He said this in response to a journalist’s question about whether Ukraine should give up territory to achieve a settlement. At the same time, Karis emphasized that the decision ultimately belongs to Kyiv.

On January 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv is not ready for compromises on the status of the Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine would not give up those territories “without a fight.”

The magazine The American Conservative wrote that it is more convenient for Zelenskyy to lose territories controlled by Kyiv due to the advance of Russian troops than by formally relinquishing them as part of a peace settlement.
