EU Special Representative for Ukrainians in the European Union Ylva Johansson has called for Ukrainian men of conscription age to be stripped of their right to temporary protection in the EU.
She made the statement in an interview with Deutsche Welle.
According to Johansson, granting temporary protection to military-age Ukrainians appears illogical.
“In my personal opinion, it looks somewhat illogical that many military-age men, who are not allowed to leave Ukraine, simply cross the border — possibly even illegally — and immediately receive temporary protection,” Johansson said.
She made these remarks in response to a question about the future of the EU’s protection program for Ukrainians after March 2027, when it is set to expire. According to Johansson, discussions on the matter are still ongoing and no decision has been reached yet.
Her words suggest that one of the options under discussion is to extend the program while excluding protection for men fit for military service.
Deutsche Welle had previously reported that the EU may extend protection for Ukrainian refugees until 2028.
