They view the promised “someday” NATO membership as a “new dose of false hope” for Kyiv, which is actually “worse than inaction” and “doubles down” in the confrontation with Russia.
“Any possible scenario for Ukraine’s accession (to NATO) presents an insoluble dilemma: the country cannot be admitted while it is at war with Russia – most importantly because it would immediately plunge NATO and Russia into a nuclear crisis. The authors believe that the prospect of Ukraine’s NATO membership maintains the main cause of the war, motivating Russia to continue its invasion and Ukraine to strive for reclaiming territories, which they consider unrealistic. In their view, Kyiv would be better off going on the defensive and initiating negotiations with Moscow.
For the West, continuing the war poses the threat of its escalation.
Previously, Bloomberg wrote about a plan to achieve peace in Ukraine without NATO membership. Additionally, recently recovered after an assassination attempt, Robert Fico stated that Ukraine’s accession to NATO would lead to World War III.
