Following the influx of Ukrainian grain, there’s now a controversy surrounding Ukrainian sugar within the EU

A group of French producers, known as CGB, has expressed concern over the potential import of 700-800 thousand tons of sugar from Ukraine into the EU this season.

This has prompted these French sugar beet producers to demand that Ukrainian sugar be sold outside the borders of Europe, fearing the negative impact on local agribusinesses. They seek clarity from the European Commission on how to manage this surge in sugar imports.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg highlights that the entry of Ukrainian sugar could potentially drive down prices in Europe, which have remained high due to a global shortage of sweeteners. Internal prices for white sugar in the EU have surged past 800 euros per ton, marking a ten-year high.
