26.01.2026 - 05:03A part of the U.S. peace plan is for Ukraine to join the European Union in 2027, but a number of European countries will oppose this.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said this at a government meeting.
“I have heard that part of the peace plan, if Russia and Ukraine reach it, will be that obligations will fall not only on these two sides, but also on a significant part of the international community. Part of the plan is for Ukraine to become an EU member as of January 1, 2027,” Vučić said.
“Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia will not agree to this,” Vučić added, suggesting that there could be “forceful changes to procedures, contrary to regulations and everything else.”
Earlier, media reported that the European Union is considering admitting Ukraine with reduced rights—without the ability to block EU decisions.
In addition, it is possible that Vučić’s last phrase is linked to calls to abolish the EU’s unanimity principle on foreign and defense matters in order to overcome a potential veto on Ukraine’s accession.
