March 4, 2024The Chief of the Defense Staff of France, Thierry Burkhard, wrote to NATO colleagues a few weeks ago, asking about the possibility of sending foreign troops to Ukraine to perform a range of tasks, claims former US NATO ambassador Ivo Daalder in an article for Politico.
In particular, the letter “considered the possibility of creating a coalition willing to undertake some of Ukraine’s tasks, including equipping defense systems, training forces in the country, conducting cyber operations and providing assistance in demining.”
According to Daalder, allies responded with a resounding “What the hell?” And “made it clear” that their response was a categorical “no.” Daalder believes that Burkhard would not have written such a letter without Macron’s support. It is worth noting that publicly, the majority of European countries have expressed opposition to sending their troops to Ukrainian territory, emphasizing the danger of a global war.
