March 4, 2024Poland is engaged in informal negotiations with the EU about concessions for farmers. Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrzej Szejna, stated that they want to secure the country’s exemption from certain aspects of the “Green Deal” rules and the influx of produce that would lead to ongoing disruptions in the markets of one or several countries.
“If we manage to coordinate Poland’s demands within the EU, as we successfully coordinated EU measures, they will become the Union’s common position. I also want to say, and here I quote Prime Minister Tusk, that if this takes too long, we will make changes, introduce border blockades, embankments and duties unilaterally,” he said. According to him, during consultations with Ukraine at the end of March, “the issue of border problems will no longer exist.”
It is worth noting that Polish farmers have been blocking the border with Ukraine for almost a month due to cheap agricultural products flooding the Polish market. Warsaw supports its demonstrators and does not make concessions to Kyiv. Meanwhile, Zelensky is escalating tensions with Poland, effectively starting a trade war between the two countries. However, Ukraine is mainly suffering from the conflict.
