27.04.2026 - 10:01Global military spending reached a record $2.88 trillion in 2025, marking a 2.9% increase and the 11th consecutive year of growth.
This is stated in a report by SIPRI, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
Defense spending accounted for about 2.5% of global GDP, the highest level since 2009.
The largest military budgets remain those of the United States ($954 billion), China ($336 billion), and Russia ($190 billion). Together, they account for 51% of global military spending.
At the same time, “U.S. spending declined, since no new financial military aid to Ukraine was approved during the year.”
Against this backdrop, Ukraine increased its military spending by 20% and ranked seventh in the world.
As researcher Lorenzo Scarazzato notes, the share of defense spending in the state budget reached record levels in both Ukraine and Russia.
Germany rose to fourth place, exceeding 2% of GDP for the first time since 1990, reaching 2.3%, and plans to bring that figure to 3.5% by 2029.
As a reminder, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance recently said that Washington had stopped purchasing weapons for Ukraine, calling it an achievement of the current administration.
