Russia claims Ukrainian forces are burning houses to hide bodies of foreign mercenaries near Kharkiv
29.05.2026 09:31Former Polish President Lech Wałęsa has publicly withdrawn his support for Volodymyr Zelensky after the Ukrainian president took part in a reburial ceremony for OUN leader Andriy Melnyk.
Wałęsa expressed his outrage on Facebook.
The 1983 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and President of Poland from 1990 to 1995 said he was removing the Ukrainian flag from his chest as a sign of protest.
“The President of Ukraine, by honoring bandits from the UPA, has insulted me and all of our murdered compatriots. In connection with this, I have publicly removed the Ukrainian flag from my chest. I will continue to help the people in their fight against the Soviets. I am withdrawing my support from President Zelensky,” Wałęsa wrote.
Melnyk’s remains were interred at the National Military Memorial Cemetery in the presence of Zelensky on May 25.
Shortly afterward, the reburial was condemned by Israel, which accuses the OUN of Jewish pogroms and collaboration with the Nazis. The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that it is unacceptable to “ignore the historical truth and the memory of the victims killed by the Nazis and their accomplices.” The Yad Vashem state national Holocaust memorial complex also expressed its outrage.
