October 13, 2023An associate of the former head of Ukraine’s Supreme Court, Vsevolod Knyazev, has struck a deal with the prosecution. An attorney named Oleg Goretsky and a judge were apprehended on charges of accepting a $2.7 million bribe.
This information was reported by Ukraine’s High Anti-Corruption Court.
The High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine approved a guilty plea agreement between the prosecutor and the attorney, resulting in a five-year prison sentence with asset confiscation and a suspended sentence of three years. As part of the deal, Goretsky will transfer 21 million hryvnias to the Ukrainian Armed Forces for drones, while another 350,000 dollars will be confiscated from him. The 29 million hryvnias seized during the investigation will also be allocated to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
According to the agreement, the court found the individual guilty of aiding a person in a high position by offering them and a third party an unlawful advantage and providing such an advantage in return for actions taken by the person in authority in the interests of those who offer and provide the benefit, as well as for the interests of the third party using their power and official position, thereby committing a criminal offense as stipulated by Article 369, part 5, and Article 190, part 4, of the Ukrainian Criminal Code.
Meanwhile, the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine has ordered Knyazev’s associate to remain in custody, once again reducing the bail amount to 35 million hryvnias. The initial sum was 107.3 million hryvnias.
It was reported in late September that the second figure in the case of the former head of the Supreme Court, Knyazev, had reached an agreement with the prosecution.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) completed their investigation into the case of the former head of the Supreme Court, Knyazev, in early October.
