German Chancellor Scholz is ready for negotiations with Putin if they lead to peace in Ukraine – Reuters
October 9, 2024Neither the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, nor the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, want peace because both believe that time is on their side.
This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, sharing insights from his meetings with both heads of state.
“Both leaders, Russian and Ukrainian, firmly believe that time is working in their favor. Both of them. That’s why they don’t want to make any compromises or move towards peace. That was my impression. They want to fight. This is bad for Europe. I’m not focusing on what is good for Ukraine or Russia right now, I am speaking from a European perspective,” Orban said.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also mentioned what he suggested to EU leaders after his trips to Kyiv and Moscow.
“Europe, I told the prime ministers, instead of discussing the so-called position of supporting the war with the Global South, let’s choose cooperation with the Global South. The Chinese, Brazilians, Arab countries, and the EU should together create a peace platform and try to take steps to bring the two warring countries to a ceasefire. That was my suggestion, I didn’t propose anything more. It was rejected,” he said.
Earlier, Western media reported that Orban had discussed with China and Brazil his intention to initiate a peace summit between Ukraine and Russia.
