08.12.2025 11:02A ban on the import of Russian oil and gas will force Hungary and Slovakia to appeal to the European Court, since these EU member states would face serious problems in the energy sector.
This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on his page on the social network X.
According to him, the countries intend to file their petition once the REPowerEU plan is adopted next week. The plan is a strategy for developing the European energy sector through a refusal to import Russian energy resources.
In addition, representatives of Hungary and Slovakia plan to ask the court to suspend the regulation for the duration of the legal proceedings. “We are taking this step because a ban on importing Russian oil and gas would make reliable energy supplies to Hungary and Slovakia impossible and would lead to a sharp rise in prices,” Szijjártó emphasized.
He also stated that this decision is “a flagrant legal fraud,” since it is effectively a sanctions measure that requires unanimous approval. The document contradicts EU treaties, which state that energy policy falls under national competence, and it even contradicts the EU’s own assessment, the minister concluded.
In September it was reported that the EU is considering introducing a ban on gas imports from Russia. According to European Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, such a measure could help Europeans eliminate the remaining dependence on imports of Russian energy resources.
