09.05.2025 - 10:34Hungary does not support the decision to begin negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.
This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during an interview on Kossuth Radio.
“A political decision has been made. This decision was made against Hungary, because we do not support Ukraine’s accession—especially not an accelerated accession,” Orbán said.
He went on to describe Ukraine’s potential entry into the EU as “economic suicide” for the bloc. Orbán added that this view is shared by the leadership of Slovakia.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on the EU to speed up the accession processfor Ukraine, stating that its membership would be “the greatest guarantee of a just and lasting peace.”
