September 13, 2023Hungary has stated that it has reached an agreement with Romania, Slovakia, and Bulgaria not only to extend the embargo on Ukrainian agricultural products beyond September 15 but also to expand the list of restricted items.
This announcement was made by Hungary’s Minister of Agriculture, István Nagy.
“We have agreed with my Romanian, Slovak, and Bulgarian colleagues that if Brussels does not make a decision to extend the existing moratorium, we will take national measures individually,” István Nagy wrote.
Poland has also discussed the extension of the ban on importing Ukrainian agricultural products. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stated that they would not allow the reopening of agricultural markets, regardless of the European Union’s decision. Poland, however, does not oppose the transit of Ukrainian grain through its territory.
If such bans are imposed, Ukraine could consider filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding compensation for damage caused by the violation of General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) norms.
To recap, the ban on importing Ukrainian agricultural products is in place in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Slovakia, with the current ban set to expire on September 15.
