Hungary will block negotiations with Ukraine on EU accession until language-related demands are met

Hungary will block negotiations between Ukraine and the European Union regarding EU membership until their language education requirements are met.

This statement was made by the political director of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Balázs Orbán, in an interview with NOS.

“Hungary has always been a supporter of Ukraine’s alignment with the European Union,” but the new language law has changed their stance. “Hungary’s position is absolutely clear: as long as this law exists, there can be no discussions with Ukrainians about their integration into the European Union. We will block it until the issue is resolved. The new laws have made life unbearable for Hungarians in Ukraine. We cannot accept this,” Orbán stated.

To recap, the new law requires all minorities to receive at least 70% of their education in the Ukrainian language.
