U.S. President Donald Trump said he expects today’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to result in a ceasefire in Ukraine.
He made the remarks to reporters aboard the plane en route to Alaska.
“I want certain things — I’d like to see a ceasefire. Europe has nothing to do with it, Europe cannot dictate what I should say. But they will be included in this [negotiation] process, as will Zelensky. But I want to see a ceasefire as soon as possible. I don’t know if that will happen today. I will be unhappy if it doesn’t happen today,” the U.S. president said.
He also reiterated that he hopes for a positive outcome from the meeting.
“We’re going to meet with Putin in Alaska, and I think it’s going to go very well. And if it doesn’t, I’ll come home very quickly,” Trump said.
Earlier today, he had already expressed hope that “something will come out” of the Alaska summit.
