October 5, 2023Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Moscow has never objected to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, and currently, according to the Kremlin’s head, Russia does not oppose it.
This statement was made during the plenary session of the 20th meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club.
“If Ukrainians want to join the EU, let them join. If Europeans want to accept Ukraine, let them accept it. If the EU is ready to include Ukraine with its current economy, then so be it,” Putin said. He also emphasized, “As for NATO, yes, we have always been against it.”
During the summer, Putin hinted that Russia could strike at NATO airbases in countries if planes took off from there to participate in the war in Ukraine. He also stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership would pose a threat to Russia’s security. One of the reasons for the invasion was the threat of Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Alliance.
“As for Ukraine’s NATO membership, we have repeatedly stated that it poses threats to Russia’s security, obviously. I am confident that NATO membership will not enhance Ukraine’s security,” he said at the time.
