May 3, 2024The “Azov” brigade is still being denied assistance from the United States, and the president has refused to address this issue.
This was stated by the brigade commander, Denis Prokopenko.
According to him, the brigade tried twice to submit a petition on the website of the President of Ukraine, but they were refused publication. The Presidential Office cited that this issue is not within the competence of Volodymyr Zelensky.
The issue at hand is that the United States themselves prohibit providing arms to “Azov”.
“This is a consequence of amendments to US laws that have been in effect since 2017, which block the provision of weapons, training, or other assistance to the ‘Azov’ battalion,” reminded the brigade commander.
In the petition to Zelensky, the members of “Azov” wanted to urge the leadership of Ukraine “to make every effort to have the amendment prohibiting the provision of American weapons to ‘Azov’ removed from US laws.”
It is worth noting that the amendment prohibiting arming “Azov” was introduced in 2015 by Democratic congressman John Conyers Jr. Referring to publications in the Western press, he stated that “Azov” (then a battalion) was characterized as “openly neo-Nazi.” In 2017, the amendment was approved and is still in effect. “Azov” denies the accusations of neo-Nazism and calls them “Russian propaganda.”
