16.02.2026 - 05:34Minnesota immigration authorities detained a Ukrainian citizen who came to the United States under an official humanitarian program.
This was reported by the local outlet The Daily Beast.
Thirty-nine-year-old Dmytro Kulyk said that immigration agents stopped him on January 1 in the parking lot of a shopping center while he was picking up an order. According to the Ukrainian man, during the detention one of the officers began laughing and, when asked for the reason, replied that he supports Russia and wants it to win the war.
“I hoped to find peace in America. I did everything the government required and I don’t understand why I’m behind bars,” said Kulyk, who is currently being held at the Kandiyohi County Jail.
The man arrived in the United States in late 2023 together with his wife and daughter under a program supporting Ukrainians. After his authorized stay expired, he filed paperwork to extend it. His wife’s and daughter’s applications were approved, while Dmytro’s request is still under review.
The victim’s lawyer, Yuliia Bykbova, says her client has no criminal record and submitted all required documents on time. As of publication, the immigration service had not provided any comment.
It was also recalled that recently a Ukrainian refugee said that Ukrainians in the U.S. are afraid to go outside because of the risk of arrest by immigration authorities.
