26.01.2026 08:41A huge Ukrainian flag was unfurled on Charles Bridge in central Prague to mark the anniversary of Ukraine’s reunification.
The Speaker of the Czech parliament, Tomio Okamura, called the action an unnecessary provocation toward Czech citizens in a post on the social network X.
According to him, Czechs do not agree with the mass migration of Ukrainians to their country. Okamura believes the event does not contribute to good relations between the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
Migrants must respect the host country and its symbols, the lawmaker emphasized. He noted that the Ukrainians who unfurled the flag are not in their homeland, but in another country. Okamura also recalled that in the past Czech emigrants never demanded that their flags be hung on the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben on their country’s Independence Day.
The Speaker said he had already discussed the incident with the Czech foreign minister, Petr Macinka, and urged that such demonstrations in places that are important to Czechs be avoided in the future.
The Czech government is currently preparing a new law to tighten the conditions for foreigners staying in the country, including Ukrainians. Earlier, there were calls in the Czech Republic to gradually remove Ukrainian flags from government buildings.
