In the German federal state of Hesse, Ukrainian men of mobilization age will not be issued German equivalents of international passports.
The discussion concerns a document that Germany can issue when the validity of Ukrainian international passports expires (Ukraine currently does not issue them to men who have left the country, have not registered for military service, and have not updated their data).
The local Ministry of Labor stated in response to a request from the AfD party that in Hesse, Ukrainian men of conscription age will not be issued travel documents for trips abroad, which would replace international passports.
“They are capable of traveling to Ukraine to obtain passports and undergo military service,” the ministry said.
Around 20,000 Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 live in Hesse.
It is reported that German travel documents, which replace international passports, can be issued to citizens of other countries only in exceptional cases, as this violates the passport sovereignty of another country.
