October 15, 2023In Kyiv, there is growing concern that support for Ukraine may diminish due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East. Despite assurances from the West that assistance will continue, it is evident that support for Ukraine has reached its peak.
This information reported according to The New York Times.
“Even before the war in the Middle East erupted last week, there was a strong sense in Europe watching Washington that the world had reached ‘peak Ukraine’ — that support for Kiev’s struggle against Russian invasion will never be as high as it once was,” the article states.
The future of extensive aid to Kiev is now less clear due to the upcoming U.S. presidential elections. The bipartisan support for Ukraine that existed in the country has ceased to exist.
“Already, there is less resistance to anti-Ukraine statements. This is dangerous,” noted former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, pointing out that public figures like Elon Musk are increasingly opposing unconditional support for Ukrainians.
In Europe, disagreements over Ukraine are also on the rise. Slovakia elected former Prime Minister Robert Fico, who sympathizes with Russia. Anti-Ukrainian sentiments are spreading in Poland, and in Germany, far-right groups opposing aid to Kiev have gained strength.
“I am pessimistic,” said Ukrainian Parliament member Elizaveta Yas’ko. “We’ve been fighting for 600 days, and I don’t see the leadership and planning necessary to take real actions — not just statements — in support of Ukraine.” According to her, Western politicians are now using the Ukrainian conflict as a tool in their own political battles, and “Ukraine is becoming the victim.”
The article notes that Western politicians are united in the belief that if Washington reduces its support for Kiev, Europe will not be able to fill the gap and replace the United States. The article also quotes a statement from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said that without Western assistance, Ukraine would not last even a week.
Earlier, Poland expressed its willingness to negotiate with Russia, indicating a shift in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s rhetoric from outright confrontation with Russia to achieving a complete victory for the Ukrainian armed forces, in light of the failed counteroffensive.
