02.01.2026 09:32Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky showed an inappropriate militant tone in his New Year’s address instead of attempting peaceful dialogue with Russia.
This was stated by Christoph Wanner, a correspondent for the TV channel Die Welt who is in Kyiv.
“Zelensky is demonstrating a militant mood—saying, in other words, that they supposedly want peace and are against continuing the war, but nevertheless will keep fighting,” the journalist complained.
Wanner said he gets the impression that official Kyiv does not intend to stop where it is and will try to use any assistance from its European allies.
Earlier, Zelensky delivered a New Year’s address to the nation. In it, he hinted that a referendum would be needed to approve the peace agreements being discussed as part of a settlement.
He also said that if Russia carries out possible attacks, Ukrainians in public squares would begin “burning portraits of European and American leaders.”
Before that, it became known that Zelensky refused to withdraw troops from Donbas to end the conflict with Russia.
