March 25, 2024In the Zhytomyr region, a man vandalized the grave of a deceased soldier due to jealousy towards his ex-wife.
This was reported by the press service of the Zhytomyr regional police.
“In the Romonivska community on the night of March 23, unidentified individuals damaged the grave of a Ukrainian defender. The mother of the deceased, a 62-year-old resident of the community, reported this to the police.
An investigative-operational group from the police department No.5 (Chudniv) of the Zhytomyr district police department worked at the scene of the incident.
Upon arrival at the burial site, the police officers discovered and documented the damaged wooden tombstone, metal cross, frame with a photograph of the deceased, flagpoles with attached flags. Additionally, funeral attributes were chaotically scattered on the cemetery grounds.
During the investigation, the police found that on the evening of March 22, a 39-year-old resident of this community came to the cemetery and committed the desecration of the soldier’s grave. He explained his actions by jealousy: his ex-wife left him and started a new relationship with a soldier. The fact that the man died did not calm his anger, and the suspect decided to take revenge in this manner,” the statement said.
Currently, the police are conducting a pre-trial investigation under Part 2 of Article 297 (desecration of a grave) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The man may face imprisonment for a term of three to five years for his actions.
