Ukrainian military report full Russian capture of the high-rise district in Kurakhove
December 16, 2024Russia has begun confiscating land plots owned by Ukrainian citizens in the Kursk, Bryansk, and Belgorod regions.
This was reported by the Telegram channel Mash, citing a court ruling.
The confiscations are being carried out under a law prohibiting foreigners from owning land in border areas of the Russian Federation. While this law has been in effect for some time, funds from the sale of confiscated plots were previously transferred to Ukrainian owners after auctions.
However, courts have now started issuing rulings that direct the proceeds to the Russian state budget instead. A precedent has already been set in the Belovsky district of the Kursk region, where a plot owned by Ukrainian citizen Valeriy Kozlitin was confiscated. Another 20 similar cases are reportedly in the pipeline.
The channel notes that this shift toward confiscation occurred after some Ukrainian landowners, upon receiving payments from sales, sent messages such as “Thank you for supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” implying that they intended to donate the funds to the Ukrainian military.
Previously, media reported that Russia had nationalized the assets of prominent Ukrainians, including Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Jamala, and others, in Crimea. The list of nationalized property belonging to Ukrainian individuals and entities includes over 110 objects.
Last year, it was revealed that a property belonging to Volodymyr and Olena Zelensky in Livadia, Crimea, had been sold. Crimean authorities stated that the apartment was nationalized and sold at auction for 44.3 million rubles (just under half a million dollars).
