In Ukraine, the Leopard 2 tanks are rarely used due to a lack of spare parts and unsuccessful attempts to repair them

In Ukraine, only a small number of Leopard 2 tanks of the modern A6 modification are being used, as independent attempts by Ukrainians to repair them result in even greater malfunctions.

This was reported by Sebastian Schäfer, a member of the “Greens” party and an expert on defense budgets, as per the Austrian publication Kurier.

Before Christmas, Schäfer, along with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, visited a repair workshop in Lithuania. He mentioned that repairs are taking a very long time because the necessary spare parts are lacking. In his letters to defense companies Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), the deputy highlighted the “pressing need to take measures” to swiftly improve the spare parts situation.

He revealed that Ukrainian military personnel had attempted to repair the tanks themselves, but this only led to further damage. Consequently, Schäfer added, it’s essential to ascertain if such situations can be prevented by enhancing mechanics’ training or providing additional instructions. Moreover, it’s crucial to determine if repairs can be conducted directly within Ukraine.
