The new government of Poland will maintain the ban on importing Ukrainian grain
January 3, 2024The Western media is once again reporting on the conflict between Volodymyr Zelensky and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhny, but now in the context of the introduction of a draft law on mobilization and the announced plans to mobilize 500,000 people.
The Financial Times released another article on the confrontation.
“Neither side seems willing to take full responsibility for the call-up of possibly reluctant hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to serve in a grim, protracted war,” Financial Times writes.
The publication noted that Zelensky attempted to shift responsibility for such a decision onto the General Staff. However, Zaluzhny did not take responsibility either. He held his first press conference since February 2022 and stated, “We are an army, and we should fight, not meddle in the lives of civilians.”
“Given the risk of public backlash, the task of preparing people for the armed forces has become something of a hot potato in Kyiv, tossed back and forth between Ukraine’s political leaders and its top military commanders. A mass call-up for a war of attrition will always be a tough challenge. Zelensky’s eagerness to share the burden of responsibility for the new recruitment campaign with the top military command indicates that 2024 will be more challenging both on the home front and the frontlines,” commented Financial Times.
The newspaper highlights that “some within Zelensky’s circle” see Zaluzhny as a potential political rival.
