American entrepreneur and head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, mocked the “independent media” in Ukraine that lost American grants.
He made the post on his social media account on X.
Musk shared a Washington Post headline stating, “Independent media in Russia and Ukraine lose funding due to USAID freeze.” He accompanied the repost with the phrase “independent media,” placing it in quotation marks to emphasize skepticism.
Previously, the head of Ukraine’s Institute of Mass Information stated that approximately 90% of Ukrainian media were funded through USAID.
Globally, USAID has provided financial support to over 6,200 journalists from 707 media outlets and 279 media-focused nonprofit NGOs, including major American media organizations.
As a reminder, USAID suspended all funding for programs and projects in Ukraine following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to initiate a 90-day audit. According to Ukrainian MP Maryan Zablotskyi, Ukraine hosts 112 USAID projects, with total funding reaching approximately $7 billion.
