This was stated in an interview by Ukraine’s Consul General in Gdańsk, Svitlana Krysa.
“The largest number of Ukrainian citizens after Germany is concentrated in Poland. … The number of Ukrainians in Poland began to grow sharply after 2014,” she said.
In January 2026, Ukraine’s Minister of Social Policy Denys Uliutin said that more than 5.8 million people had left the country since the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Media reports in September 2025 also said that at that time 5.7 million Ukrainians were living abroad, most of them in Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
On April 14, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz promised that Berlin would help facilitate the return home of Ukrainian men of conscription age who had gone to Europe. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also said that Ukraine and Germany would work together to return draft evaders to Ukraine.
