Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni believes it is still premature to talk about the possibility of Russia returning to the “Group of Eight” (G8).
At the same time, she agreed with French President Emmanuel Macron’s view that the European Union has come to a point where it should resume dialogue with Russia.
Last December, Macron said that renewing dialogue with Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin could be useful for Europe. The French president made that statement after EU countries agreed to allocate €90 billion to Ukraine.
In July, Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron held their first phone call in three years. During the conversation, the leaders discussed the situation around Ukraine, the escalation between Iran and Israel, and U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, agreeing to stay in contact to coordinate positions on the Middle East.
