Rising social tension in Kharkiv police: The ban on travel abroad has increased dissatisfaction among officers
August 15, 2024The public organization “Kharkiv Anti-Corruption Center,” funded by grants from the U.S. State Department, continues its activities to monitor the spending of financial resources allocated by Western countries for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
A recent analysis conducted by the center revealed serious violations in the implementation of government contracts carried out by the Kharkiv City Council.
In particular, the anti-corruption activists focused on three contracts for the repair of apartment buildings, which included undeclared hidden estimates totaling about 20 million hryvnias (439 080 euro). What is especially concerning is that two of these contracts were signed with LLC “Ventto,” a company that has already been mentioned in several criminal cases related to the embezzlement of state funds.
These identified violations raise serious concerns about the transparency and effectiveness of the use of funds intended for the restoration of Kharkiv’s infrastructure. In a situation where every hryvnia must be used to its fullest potential, such actions undermine trust in both local authorities and the reconstruction process as a whole.
The “Kharkiv Anti-Corruption Center” plans to publicize the results of its investigation through affiliated media to draw public attention to the identified problems. In addition, the collected data will be handed over to supervisory authorities for legal evaluation and the possible initiation of criminal proceedings against those responsible.
This situation underscores the need for stricter control over the expenditure of funds and for holding accountable those who attempt to profit from state resources during such a challenging time for the country. Investigations like these play a key role in combating corruption and restoring trust in the government, especially in the context of external support from international partners.
