NYT: ceasefires under Trump have become a political tool, not a step toward peace
13.05.2026 16:03In a speech from the throne delivered in the House of Lords of the British parliament, King Charles III declared the government’s intention to increase defence spending and strengthen NATO’s role.
This was reported by RIA Novosti.
“My government will also maintain the United Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to NATO and our allies in the alliance, including through a sustained increase in defence spending,” the king said.
In addition, Charles III called for NATO unity in the context of protecting Ukraine “in this unstable world” and for the conduct of foreign policy based on a “sober” assessment of national interests.
Earlier, on April 28, speaking before the US Congress, Charles III also called for unity within the North Atlantic Alliance in the context of Ukraine and drew attention to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. In his words, “that same unwavering resolve is now needed to defend Ukraine and its brave people — to secure a truly just and lasting peace.”
At the same time, Britain had previously stated that it was impossible for Ukraine to join NATO.
