15.02.2026 - 12:02Kyiv is “on the brink of catastrophe,” and the preservation of Ukraine as an independent state is “in question.”
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said this in an interview with the Financial Times.
According to him, the issue now is the survival of Ukraine’s independence.
“Right now, the question of the future of our country—whether we can survive as an independent country or not—remains open,” Klitschko said.
He believes the reason is that the United States is insisting on ending the war on unfavorable terms.
At the same time, Russian airstrikes over the past two months have “brought Kyiv to the brink of catastrophe.” Repeated strikes knock out electricity, heating, and water; workers repair the damage, then Russian forces strike again, forcing them to restart repairs from scratch, Klitschko added.
Recall that earlier, MP Fedir Venislavskyi also warned about the threat of Ukraine losing its statehood if the war cannot be ended in the near future.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he favors continuing the war if a peace deal, in his view, would be “bad.”
