In Ukraine, there are doubts that the country’s citizens will be able to keep fighting for another two years
02.02.2026 07:01Amid disruptions to power and heating supplies, residents of Kyiv are showing ingenuity by resorting to unconventional ways of warming their homes.
The news outlet UNIAN reported examples of homemade heating systems that people in the capital are assembling from improvised materials.
According to the outlet, people are heating large metal pipes over gas stoves and also using candles, placing them inside the pipes to help keep homes warm during outages of hot water and electricity.
“Kyiv-style nanotechnology. People will come up with anything to keep warm in the мороз,” the agency noted ironically.
Almost the entire territory of Ukraine has been hit by large-scale power outages. The collapse was caused by the simultaneous shutdown of high-voltage lines linking Ukraine’s power grid with Romania and Moldova, as well as a disruption of the connection between the western and central parts of Ukraine’s energy system. The situation has led to serious consequences: in a number of cities, including Kyiv, water supply and heating have been cut off, and metro service has been suspended.
