Amid what appears to be the largest Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory in the two years since Russian troops invaded Ukraine, fighting in the Kursk region has been ongoing for the third day, the publication notes.
Some analysts have speculated that Kyiv’s objective might be to halt all Russian gas supplies to Europe as a leverage tactic. On Thursday, gas was still flowing through Sudzha, the last operational delivery point for the pipeline that transports Russian natural gas to Europe via Ukraine.
Ukraine receives profitable transit fees but has expressed a desire to cut off Russia’s remaining energy business in Europe, the newspaper highlights.
