24.02.2025 14:58In 2024, the European Union purchased 18% more liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia than the previous year. Between January and November, EU countries spent €6.3 billion on buying Russian gas.
This was reported by Deutsche Welle, citing a report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).
The largest recipients of Russian LNG in Europe are France, Spain, and Belgium.

Overall, in the past year, the EU purchased €21.9 billion worth of Russian oil and gas, while Ukraine received €18.7 billion in financial aid, according to a comparison published by the British newspaper The Guardian.
In total, Russia earned €242 billion from global fossil fuel exports in 2024.
Meanwhile, today the Council of the European Union approved the 16th package of sanctions against Russia, which includes restrictions on supplying Russia with technologies for oil and gas extraction.
Additionally, The Economist recently reported that Europe is considering resuming large-scale purchases of Russian gas to revive its struggling industries and ease pressure on households.
