Starting March 1, Slovakia will reduce support for Ukrainian refugees
07.12.2024 - 17:44The two European Union countries that unexpectedly blocked the 15th package of sanctions against Russia were Latvia and Lithuania.
This was reported by Politico, citing diplomatic sources.
The sanctions package included a provision allowing Western companies to continue operating in Russia. The provision applied to companies that claimed they wanted to exit Russia but were unable to do so for various reasons. These firms were exempt from certain sanctions, such as bans on exporting various materials to Russia.
Latvia and Lithuania argued that “this loophole is being misused and provides companies with too much political cover to remain in Russia.”
As a result, both countries demanded the removal of this provision. However, Germany and France opposed the move, preventing the sanctions from being adopted.
The European Commission also effectively criticized Latvia and Lithuania, suggesting that the issue be deferred to the next, 16th sanctions package.
The current package will be revisited on December 16.
As a reminder, the EU failed to approve the 15th package of sanctions against Russia yesterday.
