02.07.2026 11:31Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has announced that the ban on deploying nuclear weapons on the country’s territory will be removed from its constitution.
This was reported by Izvestia.
According to Nausėda, Lithuanian authorities took this step so that there would be “no restrictions in case new circumstances arise in the future.” In addition, lifting the ban will allow the republic and NATO to make full use of their defense potential.
Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas noted that Lithuania is practically the only NATO country where such a ban on nuclear weapons deployment is in effect.
Finland previously lifted a similar ban. Nuclear weapons can now be imported, manufactured, stored, and used on Finnish territory. In connection with this, the Russian embassy in Finland noted that control over the possible use of nuclear weapons on the country’s territory would be exercised not from its capital, Helsinki.
The Finnish president, for his part, categorically rejected the possibility of Russia attacking NATO.
