December 1, 2023The President of the United States, Joe Biden, might be leveraging the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss, to persuade Republicans to allocate aid to Ukraine.
This was reported by Politico’s observers Eleni Kurea and Esther Webber.
“Joe Biden’s secret weapon for Ukraine is Liz Truss,” the article states.
According to the journalists, the former UK Prime Minister arrived in Washington this week to garner support for Ukraine from skeptical Republican lawmakers. Truss is expected to help shift the discussions in American political circles “from isolationism to an active international role,” the journalists added.
“High-ranking diplomats on both sides of the Atlantic are hoping that Truss will help break the deadlock,” the observers noted.
The Biden administration had previously appealed to Congress to allocate over $105 billion to support Ukraine and Israel. However, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is currently refusing to consider this request jointly, proposing to split aid to Kyiv and some other positions for separate discussions.
In early November, the White House Coordinator for Strategic Communications, John Kirby, announced that Washington had spent 96 percent of all funds allocated to support Ukraine since the start of the Russian special operation.
Truss took over as the head of the UK government in the fall of 2022 after Boris Johnson’s resignation and held the position from September 6th to October 24th, setting a record for the shortest term as prime minister in the country.
