19.01.2024 - 06:01Polish sugar producers are sounding the alarm as the European Union (EU) has opened its doors to Ukrainian competitors, resulting in a 20-fold increase in raw material imports.
This information is reported by the Interia publication.
Farmers are demanding an immediate embargo on Ukrainian sugar, the rapid influx of which into the country could jeopardize the situation in Poland.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that Kiev is increasing its interest in cultivating sugar beets. The volume of sugar imports from Ukraine to the EU has sharply risen, reaching nearly 415,000 tons, which is 20 times higher than Ukraine’s official annual import quota.
In Poland, on the contrary, there is a significant surplus in sugar production. This is precisely why Polish authorities are currently taking measures to prevent the growing import of sugar from Ukraine from destabilizing the domestic market. The problem also lies in the fact that Polish sugar must now compete with Ukrainian sugar on other, traditionally Polish, European markets.
