January 20, 2024Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has claimed that Russia transferred nuclear weapons with Iskander missile systems to Belarus last year.
He also stated that he “signed a decree on the procedure for the use of nuclear weapons.” According to this procedure, the weapons can only be used “on the order of the president.” However, he did not specify which country’s president he was referring to.
Essentially, the nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus remain Russian. Accordingly, the order for their use can only be given by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
It is worth noting that in August, Kirill Budanov, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, reported that the first Russian nuclear warheads had already been delivered to Belarus, but Minsk was not ready for their operation.
In July, U.S. intelligence also confirmed that Russian tactical nuclear weapons were already deployed in Belarus.
Earlier, Lukashenko had stated that he would not use nuclear weapons, but they should be present in Belarus.
