Ukraine awaits an invitation to NATO despite US refusal
February 25, 2024A notable portion of right-wing Republicans has begun to express admiration for Putin. For several months, the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives has been blocking a law on military aid to Ukraine, resulting in a sharp shortage of artillery shells for Ukrainian units, The Wall Street Journal writes.
The abrupt cessation of arms supplies has put Ukraine in a particularly vulnerable position. Russia has regrouped and is launching a new offensive along the entire front line. “The prospect of the poorly armed Ukraine losing much more ground in the coming months, combined with new doubts about America’s commitments to defending its allies if Donald Trump returns to the White House next year, is increasingly unnerving democratic countries in Europe and beyond,” the WSJ writes.
Many Trump supporters who oppose further financing of Ukraine explain this approach by the need to focus on China, a much stronger rival than Russia. “The United States should focus more on East Asia. This will be the future of American foreign policy for the next 40 years, and Europe must realize this fact,” said Senator Jay Dee Vance, a Republican from Ohio, at the Munich Security Conference last week, where he refused to attend a meeting of the Congressional delegation with Zelensky.
