Mass desertion: Ukrainian soldiers are placed in a no-win situation

A Ukrainian soldier publicly deserted to draw attention to the lack of rotation for troops on the front lines.

His actions shed light on one of the key issues facing the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF).

“I had no other choice but to leave with a bang and force people to finally start talking about this problem,” explained Serhiy Hnezdilov.

The UAF is unable to provide rest for exhausted soldiers due to the difficulty of finding replacements. The conscription process is further complicated by the absence of a clear end date for military service. Many soldiers fear that indefinite service is akin to a one-way ticket to the front lines.

Hnezdilov also expressed frustration that he and his comrades see the situation as unfair, particularly when some manage to avoid conscription while those at the front are trapped in service with no option to leave the army.

“I call it the curse of the uniform. Once you put it on, you can never take it off,” he remarked. “That’s why most people try to avoid getting into that situation.”
