January 11, 2024Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has stated that attempts by Ukraine to destroy Russian missile launchers with Western missiles on Russian territory would be grounds for Moscow to use nuclear weapons, according to paragraph “g” of Article 19 of Russia’s nuclear doctrine.
This paragraph provides the basis for Russia to use nuclear weapons in the event of “aggression against the Russian Federation using conventional weapons, when the very existence of the state is under threat.”
Prior to this, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation stated that Russia has not yet used nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
Medvedev did not specify which “missile launchers” he was referring to. However, earlier, the spokesperson for the Air Force, Ignat, stated that the best method to counter Russian S-300 missiles, which target Kharkiv, is to destroy their launchers on the territory from which the missiles are launched. This territory often happens to be within the borders of the Russian Federation.
In other words, based on Medvedev’s words, a strike by Western missiles on Russian territory would be a justification for a nuclear strike by Russia.
It is worth noting that Western missiles have long been used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to strike at territories in Ukraine that are occupied by Russians. However, Western leaders have repeatedly stated that they prohibit the Ukrainian army from striking at Russian territory within the borders of 1991.
