Melnyk demands at UN Security Council that Europe and US shoot down Russian drones over Ukraine

Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN Andriy Melnyk, speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, called on European and American partners to commit to actively intercepting and destroying Russian missiles and drones over Ukrainian territory.

His remarks were reported by Ukrinform.

Speaking at the meeting, Melnyk also called for a significant increase in deliveries of air defense systems to Ukraine and for the creation of a powerful integrated shield involving partner countries. The occasion for his address was the fall of a drone on Romanian territory.

“But most of all, Ukraine needs a commitment from our European and our American partners to actively intercept and destroy Russian missiles and Russian drones over the territory of Ukraine,” Melnyk said.

In the early hours of May 29, a drone fell on the roof of an apartment building in the Romanian city of Galați. Two people were injured. Bucharest placed responsibility for the incident on Moscow, stating that the UAV had allegedly been flying toward Ukraine to carry out strikes. Romanian authorities warned that they would take diplomatic measures against Russia.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan, however, said that the drone that fell in Galați had launched from Ukrainian territory and altered its course after the air defense system was triggered.

Earlier, the president of Romania had urged Russia to strike Ukraine without causing harm to his country.
