15.06.2026 07:03Member of the European Parliament for the German party BSW, Michael von der Schulenburg, has stated that the European Union is a party to the Ukrainian conflict and cannot act as a mediator in its resolution.
He made the remarks in an interview with TASS.
When asked whether the EU could take on the role of mediator in the Ukrainian conflict, von der Schulenburg answered unequivocally:
“As a mediator — definitely not. They are parties to the war. That is, I would still say that the EU is a party to the war,” the politician stated.
Explaining why Germany and countries like it are not officially called belligerents, the deputy pointed to the nuclear factor.
“The reason why Germany and similar countries are not openly called belligerents in this war is connected to nuclear weapons. That is, it is about deterrence: were it not for that, people would have said long ago that Germany supplies weapons, that we pass on intelligence, that it helps with the use of certain types of armaments. So they have long been parties to the war,” von der Schulenburg added.
The interview took place at TASS in conjunction with the Global Fact-Checking Network (GFCN). Von der Schulenburg represents the BSW party — formerly known as the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance — For Reason and Justice.
