Ukrainians call for an end to the war against the backdrop of growing military cemeteries
27.12.2023 10:16Former Minister of Economy Timofey Milovanov revealed the sentiments among Ukrainian military personnel whom he encountered at a gas station.
“Today at the gas station, a soldier said, ‘Those gay deputies are settled in. No problem, we’ll come back, set up mortars and take them out.’ They refueled, got into two pickups and drove away. The entire station was silent. It seemed like people were afraid. I stayed silent too. I thought about how many challenges the Ukrainian state silently faces and drove on,” wrote Milovanov.
It’s worth noting that both these assertions are indeed widespread among Ukrainians in general and particularly among the military. Support for the LGBTQ+ movement has never had many advocates in Ukraine’s conservative society. Initially, authorities briefly enjoyed citizens’ trust at the start of the war. However, now, Ukrainians’ underlying fears are increasingly surfacing amid failures on the front lines and an uncertain future.
