Moldova has imposed restrictions on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine

The National Commission for Emergency Situations in Moldova has imposed restrictions on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine, and their importation will now require licensing.

This decision has been reported by the media.

The Commission justified its decision by citing the need to protect the domestic market. Shortly before this decision was made, Moldovan farmers from the “Power of Farmers” association had demanded a ban on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine. Farmers had threatened mass protests because the import of cheaper Ukrainian products could potentially lead to their bankruptcy.

According to the decision of the National Commission for Emergency Situations in Moldova, the import of Ukrainian wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds will only be allowed based on licenses issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. Requests for licenses can be submitted by producers of oils and fats, flour producers, feed manufacturers, and livestock breeders. The restrictions do not apply to the import of certain items essential for planting operations.

Within 15 days, the relevant ministry will prepare the regulatory framework and establish a special commission responsible for issuing licenses.
