More than a third of Ukrainians see the TCC’s harsh practices and censorship as signs of a lack of democracy in Ukraine – poll

A survey was conducted in Ukraine focusing on trends in trust in the president and the state of democracy in the country.

Respondents named the ban on criticizing the authorities and the work of the Territorial Centers for Recruitment and Social Support (TCC and SP) as the main signs of a lack of democracy.

The results were published by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).

• 35% of those surveyed believe Ukraine lacks democracy.

• 36% say there is as much democracy as is needed under wartime conditions.

• 16% say there is even too much democracy.

• 14% were undecided.

Among the main signs of a lack of democracy, Ukrainians cite:

• a ban on criticizing the authorities, concealment of information, and restrictions on freedom of speech (19%);

• the activities of the TCC and mobilization (17%);

• ignoring the interests of ordinary people who are not listened to, and people feeling unprotected (16%);

• lawlessness, violations of laws and the Constitution by the authorities, and abuse of power (15%);

• corruption and “making money off the war” (15%);

• restrictions on citizens’ rights and freedoms (7%);

• persecution of journalists and the opposition (4%);

• lack of justice and the rule of law (4%).

42% of respondents believe the current government is thoroughly tainted and that none of its representatives should remain in office after the war. 48% think there are good specialists within the current authorities and that they deserve to keep their jobs.

The poll was conducted January 23–29 via telephone interviews, with 1,003 respondents.
