More than 70% of Ukrainians note an increase in corruption in the country since the start of the war – survey
03.10.2025 - 10:31In September, Ukraine imported 709 million cubic meters of natural gas, of which 406 million were potentially of Russian origin, delivered via Hungary and Slovakia.
This is evidenced by data from the gas market outlet ExPro.
The share of potentially Russian gas fell to 57.3% in September, whereas in previous months it consistently exceeded 70% of total imports.
As of October 1, gas reserves in Ukraine’s underground storage facilities (UGS) amounted to 12.86 billion cubic meters, including 8.135 billion cubic meters of free gas.
A year earlier, reserves stood at 12.4 (7.7) billion cubic meters. Thus, this year more gas has been accumulated.
However, unlike last year, Ukraine is actively consuming gas for agricultural processing (elevators, grain drying). Such consumption traditionally amounts to 250–350 million cubic meters per season. Last year, due to a very dry autumn, it was almost absent.
Therefore, it can be stated that Ukraine’s gas reserves in 2025 generally correspond to those of the previous year.
It should be noted that due to shortages, Ukraine began emergency imports of gas from the EU in February–March, meaning last year’s reserves were insufficient. A similar situation is expected by experts for the next heating season.
In August, it was reported that Ukraine was increasing its purchases of natural gas, primarily of Russian origin.
For reference, eight EU countries buy Russian gas: Belgium, France, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, and Spain.
